15. God’s work.

15. God’s work.

Probably best viewed on a laptop rather than mobile for the photos, but up to you

The Tilganga Eye Institute in the Kathmandu valley is a global success, the dream of Dr Sandak Ruit, whose single minded purpose is to cure as many Nepalese as possible who suffer from cataract blindness.

Unable to contribute to their family or community in any way, and often shunned by those who should love them, many of the blind in Nepal no longer wish to live.

The incidence of cataracts here on the roof of the world is high, in the main due to the harsh light and high altitude. There are other reasons, poor diet doesn’t help and often the condition goes untreated. Dr Ruit pioneered a technique called small incision cataract surgery.

His work was once widely scorned by a traditional medical community afraid of change - western doctors in particular - whose skepticism was matched only by their arrogance: how could someone from Nepal solve a problem they couldn’t?
